Uinta Four + Punk'n Ale
( Salt Lake City, UT )

As part of the Four+ Series line of beer from Uinta, Punk'n Ale is brewed with four primary ingredients (water, barley, yeast, and hops) along with a few extras (this is the + of Four+) to flavor the beer according to the style. In this case they're using roasted pumpkin and "seasonal spices" such as cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. It pours a dark amber, almost orange, color. On the nose, you get just what you'd expect, fresh roasted pumpkin backed by subtle notes of cinnamon and nutmeg. The aromas are a bit deceiving though, with the spices almost nonexistent on the palate. There's a big hit of pumpkin right away which is devoid of sweetness or hops and only a trace of spice. The initial flavor subsides quickly and you're left with light roasted pumpkin on the palate. This is an example of pumpkin beer flavored like pumpkin, not pumpkin pie. It takes the approach of a beer that would accompany the pie, not replace it.
